Repeating favorite activities

Use whatever activity captures your child's interest
When your child shows interest in an activity, encourage them to do it multiple times, even when it might seem repetitive to you. If they love jumping off a step, let them do it 20 times. If they want to stack cups again and again, support that. Comment on their sustained interest: 'You really like practicing this.' This validates sustained focus on activities they're passionate about, building the passion component of grit.

How to Do This Activity
When your child shows interest in an activity, encourage them to do it multiple times, even when it might seem repetitive to you. If they love jumping off a step, let them do it 20 times. If they want to stack cups again and again, support that. Comment on their sustained interest: 'You really like practicing this.' This validates sustained focus on activities they're passionate about, building the passion component of grit.
Why It Works
Sustained engagement with self-chosen activities develops consistency of interest, one of the two core components of grit alongside perseverance. Research shows that while perseverance of effort often predicts achievement more strongly, consistency of interest also contributes to grit development (Datu et al., 2016). When young children practice sustained focus on activities they're passionate about, they build early patterns of deep engagement that support later goal pursuit.
Tips for Parents
Follow their lead on what they want to repeat rather than choosing for them.
Count repetitions together, which adds a goal element and helps sustain their focus.
Connect their repeated practice to improvement: 'You're jumping farther now than when you started.'
