How to Do This Activity
Point out and greet familiar people (you, other family members, consistent caregivers) as your child sees them. Let your child watch your face and expression as you greet them warmly.
Familiar faces are the foundation of emotional connection. Recognizing them helps your child begin to understand relationships and safe people.
Why It Works
Recognizing familiar faces and objects is a cognitive capability that emerges in infancy and forms the basis for understanding relationships and emotional attachment. This recognition enables children to begin distinguishing safe, responsive caregivers from others. Building these emotional connections through responsive caregiving supports the development of emotional intelligence and secure attachment relationships that predict better mental health and relationship satisfaction across the lifespan (Bar-On, 2006).
Tips for Parents
Use warm, consistent expressions when greeting familiar people. Your child learns emotional responses by watching yours.
If your child shows nervousness toward unfamiliar faces, that's normal. You can narrate what's happening: 'This is a new friend. I'm happy to see them.'
