Gentle hands practice
1–2 yearsFamily ConnectionNo materials needed
Show your child how to touch gently by guiding their hand to softly pat your arm, their own cheek, or a pet. Say 'Gentle' as you help them practice soft touches. Then point out when others need gentle touches, like when someone is sad or hurt. You might say 'Sister is sad. Can you be gentle?' This teaches your child that gentle actions help others feel better.

How to Do This Activity
Show your child how to touch gently by guiding their hand to softly pat your arm, their own cheek, or a pet. Say 'Gentle' as you help them practice soft touches. Then point out when others need gentle touches, like when someone is sad or hurt. You might say 'Sister is sad. Can you be gentle?' This teaches your child that gentle actions help others feel better.
Why It Works
Learning to modulate touch is an early form of empathetic responding. When parents model empathy and validate children's empathetic attempts, children learn to respond compassionately to others' emotions (Hoffman, 2000). At this age, children are developing the ability to understand cause and effect, so connecting gentle actions with helping others feel better builds the foundation for compassionate empathy. This direct modeling of caring behavior is particularly powerful for toddlers who learn through imitation.
Tips for Parents
Use the word gentle consistently. It becomes a cue your child will recognize.
Guide your child's hand at first. Show them what gentle feels like.
Praise gentle touches immediately. Say 'That was so gentle. That helps sister feel better.'
