Give your child a simple job during meal preparation, like washing vegetables, tearing lettuce, or stirring ingredients in a bowl. How to Do This Activity

Give your child a simple job during meal preparation, like washing vegetables, tearing lettuce, or stirring ingredients in a bowl. Explain what you are making together and how their help makes the cooking happen. Let them see the finished dish and remind them they helped create it. This builds a sense of meaningful contribution to family life.

Why It Works

Meaningful engagement in real family tasks helps toddlers develop a foundational sense that their actions matter and contribute to something larger than themselves. When children see the direct results of their helpful actions, they build both competence and purpose orientation. Childhood exposure to meaningful engagement significantly predicts adult purposefulness (Bronk, 2014), and early experiences of capability build resilience.

Tips for Parents

Choose tasks that use their developing fine motor skills, like pouring or stirring, and are genuinely safe for them to do. Use two-step instructions they can follow, like "Hold the lettuce, then tear it into pieces." Connect their work to the outcome by saying things like, "You washed these carrots. Now they are ready for our soup."
