Choose your own play

Let your child pick which activity to do together from two or three options. You might offer building blocks, coloring, or playing with toys. Once they choose, follow their lead during play. Let them decide how to use the materials and what to create. Your role is to participate when invited and observe when they want to work independently.

How to Do This Activity

Let your child pick which activity to do together from two or three options. You might offer building blocks, coloring, or playing with toys. Once they choose, follow their lead during play. Let them decide how to use the materials and what to create. Your role is to participate when invited and observe when they want to work independently.

Why It Works

Making choices builds decision-making skills and self-confidence. Research shows children who demonstrate responsible decision-making and self-reliance show 30% lower parent-child conflict in adolescence (Steinberg & Silverberg, 1986). At this age, children are developing their sense of autonomy, and honoring their preferences strengthens both independence and your relationship.

Tips for Parents

Wait for your child to invite you into their play rather than directing it. When they make a choice, acknowledge it warmly. If they struggle to decide, you can describe each option simply, but resist choosing for them. The decision-making practice matters more than the choice itself.
