How to Do This Activity

Place your child on their tummy on a soft blanket or mat for short periods. Position yourself at eye level and encourage them to lift their head by showing a colorful toy or your face. Start with one to two minutes and gradually increase as they grow stronger. This builds neck and shoulder strength essential for future movement.

Why It Works

Tummy time builds the foundation for all future physical movement and motor development. Research shows that physical activity in early childhood, including fundamental movement experiences like tummy time, supports both motor competence and cognitive development (Hao et al., 2023). Early movement experiences create positive associations with physical activity that can extend into adulthood, where regular physical activity is associated with 25% fewer depressive symptoms (Penedo & Dahn, 2005).

Tips for Parents

Start with just one minute if your child seems uncomfortable. You can try tummy time after diaper changes when your child is alert and happy. Place a small rolled towel under their chest for extra support if needed. Stay close and make it fun with songs or gentle encouragement.
