How to Do This Activity
Once your child shows signs of readiness around four to five months, help them practice sitting by supporting their sides or back. Place interesting toys in front of them to encourage reaching forward while maintaining balance. Keep sessions short and always stay close. This builds core strength essential for future movement.
Why It Works
Supported sitting develops core strength, balance, and postural control while engaging cognitive skills like spatial awareness and problem-solving. Research shows that functional physical training improves both motor capabilities and cognitive development, including improvements in attention and reaction time (Hao et al., 2023). Building physical competence early creates positive experiences with movement and establishes patterns that support lifelong physical activity and associated mental health benefits (Penedo & Dahn, 2005).
Tips for Parents
Never leave your child unattended during sitting practice. Use pillows around them for soft landing if they tip.
Watch for signs of tiredness like fussiness or slumping. Two to three minutes is plenty when starting out.
