Smile and wait

How to Do This Activity

When your baby looks at you, smile warmly and then wait to see what they do. They might smile back, make a sound, or just look at you. Whatever they do, respond positively to it. This simple exchange teaches your baby that sharing positive emotions feels good. It builds the foundation for expressing joy and connecting emotionally with others throughout their life.

Why It Works

Positive emotional exchanges through smiling and responsive interaction help infants develop emotional expression and social emotional skills. These early positive interactions support the development of emotional intelligence components including self-awareness and social skills that enhance psychological well-being and relationship quality (Brackett et al., 2011; Bar-On, 2006).

Tips for Parents

Give your baby time to respond. They process more slowly than adults do. If they don't smile back, that's okay. Just being together builds connection.
