Pause before responding

How to Do This Activity

When your child makes sounds or shows you an emotion, take a brief moment to really notice what they are expressing before you respond. Look at their face, notice their body, and let yourself feel what they might be feeling. Then respond with care. This small pause deepens your connection and shows your child they are truly seen.

Why It Works

Taking a moment to attune to your child's emotional state demonstrates true empathy and helps you respond more sensitively to their needs. This attunement is the foundation of emotional intelligence. Research shows that recognizing and responding sensitively to emotions is a childhood behavior that predicts stronger empathy and relationship quality throughout life (Eisenberg et al., 2015).

Tips for Parents

This pause can be just one or two seconds. You are not delaying care, just adding intention. If you are not sure what your child needs, try one response gently and watch how they react. You will learn together.
