How to Do This Activity

Notice and name how your child reacts to different objects or experiences. 'You like the soft blanket. You're not sure about the bumpy texture.' Let your child explore and respond at their own pace. Watching and validating your child's responses to sensory experiences teaches them that their emotional reactions matter and are worth noticing.

Why It Works

Sensory exploration is a key learning approach for infants, and responding to their emotional reactions to sensory input supports emotional awareness and autonomy. When caregivers acknowledge and validate a child's emotional responses to exploration, they build confidence in emotional self-awareness and help the child develop the ability to recognize and trust their own emotional cues. This foundation in emotional awareness and responsiveness contributes to stronger emotional intelligence and better self-regulation across the lifespan (Goleman, 1995).

Tips for Parents

Offer a variety of safe textures, sounds, and objects. Your child's responses to different sensations will be unique. Never force your child to touch or interact with something they seem hesitant about. Respecting their comfort builds confidence in their own emotional judgment.
