How to Do This Activity
Place a favorite toy just beyond your child's easy reach while they're sitting or lying down. Watch them problem-solve how to get it, whether by stretching, rolling, or scooting. Encourage their efforts with your voice and expression. When they succeed, celebrate together. This supports their emerging sense that their actions have meaningful outcomes.
Why It Works
Goal-directed behavior emerges around eight to 10 months, and supporting these intentional actions helps infants experience themselves as agents who can affect their world. This is foundational for later sense of purpose. Research demonstrates that childhood exposure to goal-setting and meaningful engagement significantly predicts adult purposefulness (Bronk, 2014).
Tips for Parents
Place the toy close enough that success is possible with effort. Too far creates frustration instead of accomplishment.
Celebrate the effort and strategy, not just the success. Say "You kept trying" or "You figured it out."
