Gentle face-to-face time

How to Do This Activity

Lie down with your child or hold them at a comfortable distance where you can see each other's faces clearly. Smile gently and wait to see if they smile back. Make simple sounds or expressions and watch how they respond. Follow their lead about how long to continue.

Why It Works

Face-to-face interactions help your child recognize you as a familiar, trustworthy person. These repeated positive exchanges build the secure attachment bond. Research shows that secure attachments help children learn, empathize, develop relationships, and cope with stress throughout their lives (Canadian Psychological Association, 2024).

Tips for Parents

Some children prefer shorter interactions. If your child looks away or fusses, they may need a break. The ideal distance is about eight to 12 inches, which is where young children see most clearly.
