During diaper changes, narrate what you're doing in simple words while making eye contact with your child. How to Do This Activity

During diaper changes, narrate what you're doing in simple words while making eye contact with your child. Pause after speaking and wait for your child to respond with coos, babbles, or facial expressions. When your child makes a sound, respond with enthusiasm and continue the conversation. This transforms a routine task into a rich communication opportunity.

Why It Works

This activity builds communication through serve-and-return exchanges, which are essential for early language development. Research shows that quality of parent-child interactions, including conversational duets with shared attention and routines, predicts successful language learning more than the quantity of words spoken (Hirsh-Pasek et al., 2015). The back-and-forth pattern helps your child learn the rhythm of conversation and shows them their communication attempts matter.

Tips for Parents

Wait at least three seconds after speaking to give your child time to respond. Their response might be a coo, a smile, or a gesture. Match your child's sounds and expressions to show you're listening. If they coo, coo back in a similar tone. Keep your language simple and your tone warm. Describe what you see and do rather than asking complex questions.
