Container and object play

6–12 monthsSuccess MindsetMaterials: Small container, three to four safe objects (blocks, fabric squares, or soft toys)

Give your child a small container and a few safe objects that fit inside. Show them how to put objects in and take them out. Let them practice this over and over. This simple activity teaches spatial reasoning, hand-eye coordination, and problem-solving. You can use a small bowl and wooden blocks, or a plastic container with fabric squares. Keep the objects large enough to be safe.

Container and object play

How to Do This Activity

Give your child a small container and a few safe objects that fit inside. Show them how to put objects in and take them out. Let them practice this over and over. This simple activity teaches spatial reasoning, hand-eye coordination, and problem-solving. You can use a small bowl and wooden blocks, or a plastic container with fabric squares. Keep the objects large enough to be safe.

Why It Works

Container play builds spatial reasoning, problem-solving, and fine motor skills simultaneously. The cognitive demands of figuring out how objects fit into spaces support the development of attention control and working memory. These early cognitive skills predict growth in emergent literacy and numeracy and contribute uniquely to kindergarten achievement (Welsh et al., 2010). Spatial reasoning developed through hands-on exploration is a component of fluid intelligence that underlies later academic performance.

Tips for Parents

Start with just two or three objects so your child is not overwhelmed. Add more as they get comfortable with the game. Narrate what they are doing. Say things like, you put the block in the bowl. This connects actions to words.
