Consistent response routine

How to Do This Activity

When your child cries or shows distress, respond in a similar, predictable way each time. Whether you pick them up, offer a bottle, provide comfort, or all three, letting your child know they can count on you matters most. Predictable responses teach your child that their emotions trigger care and help them develop trust.

Why It Works

Consistent, predictable responses to emotions are a foundational element of emotional co-regulation in infancy. When caregivers respond sensitively to a child's emotional cues with regularity, the child develops confidence that emotions can be managed and that help is available. This builds the self-regulation capacity and emotional trust that research links to better emotional intelligence, reduced anxiety and depression, and stronger relationships in adulthood (Bar-On, 2006).

Tips for Parents

Your response doesn't have to be perfect. Consistency matters more than the specific approach you choose. If something isn't working (a soothing technique, a holding position), it's fine to try a different approach next time. What matters is that you're always responding to their emotional signal.
